A set of SQL statement stored within a database under a procedure name so that the statements can be executed as a group by the database server (such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, Mysql 5.0) so that they run more rapidly. Some RDBMSs precompile stored procedures so that they execute more rapidly.
Generally, a stored procedure is faster than doing the same work through server side code (such as Php, Asp, Jsp, etc) because the program runs right inside the database server.
Stored procedures are normally written in PL/SQL or Java.
