Frequently, developers to get file information, as size, combine operative system(ls, du, bdf) with text manipulation(cut, grep, awk) commands.
For instance, in my program I need to get the size of myfile.txt file.

If from the unix prompt I just need to use ls: Or du: On my program, I can just use the same commands but extracting only the output that I need, the size info, and put it in a variable.
With awk, I extract the 5th column displayed
With cut, I extract the first column:
